FANDRY, Clarence - Willow Springs -- Clarence Fandrey, 67, was killed when his home at 220 Willow Springs Rd., caught fire Friday, Jan. 9, 1970. Fire appeared to have started in the bedroom where most of the damage occurred, but definite cause was undetermined.  Fandrey, who lived alone, died of smoke inhalation and was pronounced dead on arrival at LaGrange Community Memorial Hospital. Police Chief Chester Burda said that a story, reporting that Fandrey had died because the fire department disconnected their hose to allow a Gulf, Mobile and Ohio train through, was completely false. "The fire was reported at 10:10 p.m. and Fandrey was evacuated promptly on arrival of firemen some minutes later. The house was almost demolished by the time the hose was disconnected to allow the train through at midnight," he said. It was necessary to lay the hose across the tracks in order to get it to the closest hydrant to the house.  Fandrey was the brother of Harold Fandrey, former trustee and current sewer inspector for the village.
