THE NIX/JUDY PIONEER CEMETERY

This cemetery, located in Glen Carbon, Madison County, Illinois, contains the remains of some of the earliest families of the Goshen Settlement, established ca. 1801.  It is located along Rt. 157 and 255, on the East side of the road on a hill, surrounded by trees.  The day we went to transcribe the cemetery, a deer was feeding nearby.  It is a very peaceful spot.

There are actually two cemeteries located here, one being the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Cemetery, est. 1925.  This is in the front section.  The back section, at the top of the hill, contains the Pioneer burials and a marker, to commemorate the cemetery. Although many of the stones are in wonderful condition, considering their age, there are some which were difficult to read. We have tried our best to record them accurately.
